Agatha Christie: Former Oxfordshire home of famous author goes on sale for £2.5 million in Wallingford

The former home of acclaimed author Dame Agatha Christie is up for sale for £2.75 million

Agatha Christie’s former five bedroom house – that provided inspiration for some of the greatest crime novels of the twentieth century – is up for sale with a guide price of £2.75 million.

The wordsmith bought Winterbrook House in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, with her archaeologist husband Max Mallowan in 1934.

She lived in the now Grade II listed property until her death in 1976 and is believed to have written many of her most famous novels in the house, including Poirot and Miss Marple.

The home on the River Thames was later given a blue plaque while the current family – the Kleinknecht’s - were living there.Gregor Kleinknecht said: “Winterbrook House obviously has a wealth a history and it’s been a privilege to live somewhere that has such a special place in the hearts of so many. There was no blue plaque on the house when we moved in and we weren’t aware of the Agatha Christie connection when we first saw the house – we only found out later on.

“Most importantly it has been a wonderful family home. It has been a very happy place for Agatha Christie and so it has been for our family and we will of course be sad to leave. “We have enjoyed our time here immensely. However the time has to come to pass it on to someone new.”
