One in three skip weddings over sky-high guest costs, finds new HSBC Survey

As wedding season reaches its peak, new data from HSBC UK reveals how couples across the UK are managing their finances in the lead-up to their big day, with increasing emphasis on financial awareness and communication.
HSBC UK surveyed 2,000 UK adults to better understand spending habits throughout relationships – from early dates to marriage – and the growing importance of financial compatibility.
The findings show that while couples plan to spend an average of £10,310 on their wedding, the actual cost typically rises to £13,520, representing a 31% overspend.
Spending is highest in the capital, with London couples averaging £18,508 on their celebrations – the most expensive in the UK.
Wedding costs are also affecting guests. The average spend to attend someone else’s big day stands at £473.
Among younger adults, financial pressure is particularly evident, with 48% of 25–34-year-olds having declined a wedding invitation due to the associated costs.
The research highlights how financial considerations are playing a larger role in both wedding planning and guest participation, amid wider concerns about the rising cost of living.
“This research reveals opportunities for better financial communication. Money talks aren’t just about budgeting – they are about trust, priorities and building a future together,” says Carl Watchorn, Head of Customer Propositions.
“But many people still struggle to bring finances into the conversation, even as life gets more expensive. Breaking that silence earlier can make a real difference to couples’ wellbeing.”
