Profits for BP have soared following high energy prices after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In a statement, the energy giant has unveiled profits of an eye-watering $8.2bn (£7.1 billion) in the last quarter, compared to $3.3bn (£2.9 billion) in the same period last year.
The report has led to further calls for an increase to the government’s windfall tax on energy firms. Ed Miliband, Labour’s shadow climate change secretary, called the profits “damning evidence of the failure of the government to levy a proper windfall tax.”
Whilst former Business Secretary Alok Sharma tweeted: “We need to raise more money from a windfall tax on oil and gas companies and actively encourage them to invest in renewables.”
