What does the green dot on Tinder mean? – Dating app's ‘recently active’ feature explained

Tinder has recently added a feature which showcases a green dot next to a user’s name.

The feature has left some users of the dating app intrigued about why some profiles have the dot appear, and others don’t.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Tinder green dot.

What does the Tinder green dot mean?

Tinder introduced the green dot as a way of demonstrating if a user has been recently active or not.

If the user has a green dot next to their name, it means they have been online and active in the last 24 hours.

This can be helpful to someone wanting to strike up a conversation with recently active users.

Focusing on users who have been recently active could improve the chances of finding someone who is actually searching for dates, rather than someone who is late night couch swiping.

Who is able to see the green dot?

The green dot is only available to users who are signed up to either Tinder Gold or Tinder Platinum.

If a user doesn’t subscribe to a Tinder premium service, they will be able to see the green dot, however, the profile picture of the person who likes them will be blurred

How do I sign up for Tinder Gold and Platinum?

Tinder Gold and Platinum are the dating apps paid subscription models.

Tinder Gold grants users the ability to see other users' profiles who have liked them, allowing people to decide whether they swipe left or right before matching.

Tinder Gold users also receive new top picks every day, and get unlimited profile likes and five super likes a day.

Tinder Platinum services allow users to get unlimited likes, the chance to message potential dates before matching, and have their likes prioritised above other people’s.

To sign up for Tinder Gold or Platinum users must first enter the Tinder app.

Once in, they must go to the settings menu, which is the gear icon located at the top menu bar of the mobile app.

There will then be two options to either ‘Get Tinder Gold’ or ‘Get Tinder Platinum’. Users can pick the option they desire, and will then be asked to fill in bank details, or pay through the Apple App store, or Google Play Store.

Once you have signed up, the first subscription charge will be taken out of the users bank account within 24 hours.

Can I switch off the recently active status?

Yes.

If users would prefer to maintain an air of mystery, they can choose not to share their recently active status in the app’s settings.

To do this users must first open the Tinder app.

Once in, go to the settings menu, which is the gear icon located at the top menu bar of the mobile app.

Within settings, scroll to around halfway down the page and click on the ‘Recently Active Status’ menu button.

Once in this menu, there will be an option to turn on or off the recently active notification.

As it states, turning this off will not show you to other users who can see the green dot notification if you’ve been active in the last 24 hours.
