Europe comes alive every year with an abundance of Christmas markets brimming with treats and homemade gifts. To brighten up the long dark nights, cities across the continent offer tourists a glimpse into their traditions, and activities and entertainment to match.
From France to Finland, there are a range of incredible experiences to enjoy, so we have rounded up some of the best European Christmas markets you should consider.

5. Budapest, Hungary
In a combination of old and young, Budapest is alive with Christmas markets, The oldest sits in Vorosmarty Square, in the heart of the city. The markets offer food such as kurtoskalacs (chimney cakes gently grilled and coated in cinnamon or almond), langos ( fried dough with cheese on top), and other hot foods like dumplings and sausages. Newer markets sit outside the St Stephen’s Basilica offering an ice skating rink and Hungarian folk art. Within the markets, you can also find handcrafts such as glass-blowing, candle-making and leatherwork which will make for unique and striking gifts for your loved ones. 6. Tallinn, Estonia
Set in a fairytale landscape, Estonia’s Christmas markets are considered some of the best in Europe. They sit in the heart of town, surrounded by medieval buildings and a light dust of snow. The town hall is packed with over 60 wooden stalls, selling items from handmade wreaths, local arts, hot wine and baltic cheese. Santa is present in his grotto to welcome children to the festivities. 7. Edinburgh, Scotland
Slightly closer to home is the Edinburgh market. Combined with Hogmanay, Edinburgh glistens in the winter months and is packed full of activities to do. There’s Santa’s Grotto, an oval ice rink, rides and mazes. Stalls sell mulled Irn Bru, and local talent is showcased in performances and projections. The markets sell artisan food, and trinkets, and are a mile long with whiskey stands. Begin the trip on East Princes Street Gardens and work your way up to the Royal Mile. 8. Gothenburg, Sweden
In a twist, Sweden’s Christmas market is located in Liseberg - its most popular amusement park. You have to pay to enter and opening hours are 3pm to 10pm on most days. Treats include smoked reindeer and Scandinavian mulled wine.
