Santander is to close more than 20 UK branches next month as customers continue to move to online banking. The Spanish banking giant previously announced it was to shut 44 branches on UK high streets, and has now confirmed 26 closures will be completed before the end of May.
It comes as a host of banks shutter outlets on UK high streets, with the likes of Lloyds, Barclays and NatWest previously closing branches.
Which?, the consumer watchdog, has revealed research showing more than 6,000 banks and building societies were closed between 2015 and 2024. Santander said the closures came as customers opted to use the bank's app and website to manage their money, with 96% of transactions now being carried out online.

The news comes ahead of Santander’s takeover of rival TSB which is expected to happen in the first half of this year. It is unclear if the TSB brand will remain with the Spanish-owned buyer yet to make up its mind.
The deal valued TSB at £2.65 billion but the sale price is estimated to rise to £2.9 billion once the transaction completes, which is waiting for regulatory approval.
There are fears over job cuts and branch closures across the combined group after the deal following Santander closures. TSB, the UK’s 11th largest mortgage lender, has around 175 branches across the UK and employs more than 5,000 people.
