First “Blue Beetle,” now Sony Picture’s “Gran Turismo” keeps “Barbie” off the top spot at the US box office.

Despite receiving middling reviews in the run-up to its release, Sony Pictures’ video game-to-film adaptation ‘Gran Turismo’ has become the second film to keep the mammoth ‘Barbie’ movie off the top spot at this weekend’s US box office. Closer to home though, Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar grossing film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling shows no sign of dropping off the top of the UK box office chart - for now.

Box Office Mojo reports that despite ‘Gran Turismo’ receiving an average rating of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is certified “fresh” according to the aggregator yet still viewed as “mixed-to-positive” reviews, the film earned $17.4 million USD after it’s opening weekend across 3,856. Last weekend’s number one movie in the United States, DC’s “Blue Beetle,” dropped to third place, with “Barbie” retaining its position in second.

Two other new releases also entered the top ten in the United States over the weekend, with Liam Neeson’s latest thriller, “Retribution” by Nimród Antal debuting in eighth., while the biographical sports drama film “The Hill,” debuted in ninth position. The Dennis Quaid-led film is based around the story of baseball player Rickey Hill and how he overcame a physical handicap in order to try out for a legendary major league scout, Red Murff.

But it’s still Barbiemania overall at the box office, with the film becoming not only the highest-grossing movie at the US box office in 2023 with a gross of $592,805,387 since its release but Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing film of all time globally, eclipsing “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II.

However, it’s still not beaten the global gross made by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” that opened earlier this year. Though “Barbie” may have beaten the animated movie’s yearly revenue at the US box office, globally the Chris Pratt-voiced family film is still the biggest release this year, with a worldwide gross of $1,359,515,023 USD compared to “Barbie” and its current $1,340,405,387 gross.

But that record held this year by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is all but a formality to drop out to “Barbie” right about now.
