Taylor Swift, SZA, and Doja Cat are gearing up for a series of opportunities to enhance their trophy collections at the upcoming 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. This year is Swift's opportunity to etch her name in VMA history once again; last year, she secured her place as the first artist to clinch Video of the Year three times. Now, she's on the cusp of expanding that record-setting achievement.

Should she achieve a clean sweep this year, Swift could ascend to one of the most-honoured positions in VMA history. As of now, she holds 14 VMAs, trailing closely behind Beyoncé with 16 and the iconic Madonna with 20.

Leading the pack this year is Swift with an impressive tally of eight nominations, closely followed by SZA with six and Doja Cat with five. Other prominent contenders include Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sam Smith. This fierce lineup of artists will engage in a fierce contest in the Video of the Year category, featuring captivating entries such as Doja Cat's "Attention," Cyrus' "Flowers," Minaj's "Super Freaky Girl," Rodrigo's "Vampire," Smith and Petras' "Unholy," SZA's "Kill Bill," and Swift's "Anti-Hero."

Several of these notable tracks are also vying for the esteemed Song of the Year honour, including Cyrus' "Flowers," Rodrigo's "Vampire," Smith and Petras' "Unholy," SZA's "Kill Bill," and Swift's "Anti-Hero." In addition to the aforementioned tracks, they'll contend against Steve Lacy's "Bad Habit" and Rema and Selena Gomez's "Calm Down." Notably, Swift, Doja Cat, and Minaj have also secured nominations for Artist of the Year, going head-to-head with Karol G, Shakira, and Beyoncé.

The 2023 VMAs are set to showcase a wave of debut nominees, featuring talents like Petras, Metro Boomin, Boygenius, Fletcher, Rema, Arya Starr, Burna Boy, and Davido (the latter four gaining recognition in the newly established Best Afrobeats genre category). The competition intensifies as these newcomers vie for the title of Best New Artist, with a roster that boasts GloRilla, Ice Spice, Kaliii, Peso Pluma, PinkPantheress, and Reneé Rapp.

The 2023 VMAs are slated for a live broadcast from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on September 12. Voting for the VMAs is officially open, with the majority of categories closing on September 1 (except for Best New Artist, which remains open throughout the show).
