What did the critics say about Take That's ‘Greatest Days' musical as they performed at the London premiere?

Take That performed at the film premiere of the ‘Greatest Days’ musical at London's, Leicester Square on Thursday. The three band members Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and  Howard Donald delighted fans as they put on a performance of hits including ‘Greatest Day’, ‘Back For Good’ and ‘Rule The World’ before hitting the purple carpet. 

The film centres around a group of friends who are bound together by their love for a fictional 90’s boy band. Fast-forward 25 years and a traumatic event pulls the friends back together as they reunite to watch a show by their beloved pop group. Greatest Days stars Irish comedian Aisling Bea as the lead character Rachel and Lara McDonnell plays a younger Rachel.

‘Greatest Days’ is the film adaptation of the hugely popular stage show ‘The Band’ written by Tim Firth, and featuring songs by Take That. The musical debuted at Manchester’s Opera House in 2017. Kym Marsh and daughter Emilie Cunliffe are currently starring in the stage show as Rachel and younger Rachel. The stage-show is currently touring across the UK until November and tickets are available to buy from Greatest Days Musical Tour official website.

Critics have praised the movie with most giving it three and five star reviews. Ian Sandwell from Digital Spy described it as “a joyous crowd pleaser - whether you like Take That or not".

He added “A jukebox musical using Take That songs? Sounds a bit naff and likely very cheesy, one strictly for the fans. Dismiss Greatest Days though and you'll be missing out on one of 2023's biggest movie surprises.”

The Guardian Peter Bradshaw said “a splurge of feelgood from director Coky Giedroyc and screenwriter Tim Firth, adapting his own stage show, and it's at least as enjoyable as the much-hyped Mamma Mia! Movies."
