Watch: Pressure mounts on UK government to address asylum seeker crisis
The UK has a long-standing tradition of providing refuge to individuals fleeing persecution. Thousands of asylum seekers will be housed in disused military bases under new government plans to cut spending on hotels. Ministers say the bases will be used to accommodate their “essential living needs and nothing more”, despite legal threats from local Conservatives.
