Car drives along pavement during police chase in March, Cambridgeshire

The moment a driver mounted his car on the pavement to avoid police chasing him was caught on camera.

A shop owner has said "it's a miracle no one was hit” after a car drove along the pavement in a market town during a police chase. The shocking moment was caught on camera, showing terrified pedestrians leaping out of the way of the oncoming vehicle.

Witnesses claim multiple cars were hit by the runaway driver after they failed to stop for police, sparking panic in March, Cambridgeshire, on January 20. Cambridgeshire Police said a man in his 20s was arrested and has been bailed until April 15.

The car is said to have mounted the curb roughly 150 yards up from where the footage was filmed. The video shows what is believed to be a Volkswagen driven along the path outside Stotts Fish Restaurant - forcing one man to dive into a doorway and another into the road.

Stotts' owner, Jonathan Housley-Stott, who has lived in March for more than 40 years, said: "It's a miracle no one was hit. I'm absolutely gobsmacked in all honesty. It's not something that happens here. How someone walking out of my shop didn't get hurt or killed is beyond me. It's called fate."
