Ex-Reform UK councillor Daniel Taylor jailed for coercive control triggering by-election
A by-election has been triggered after a former Reform UK councillor was jailed for coercive control.
A former Reform UK councillor has been jailed after admitting controlling and coercive behaviour towards his wife. Daniel Taylor of Ramsgate, Kent was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment at Margate Magistrates’ Court on Friday (February 20), according to court officials.
The 36-year-old’s conviction has now triggered a by-election in Kent County Council’s Cliftonville ward. Taylor has been sitting as an Independent after he was suspended from Reform after his arrest in June last year.
After he pleaded guilty on January 9, the party “took swift action” to expel him, a Reform UK spokesperson said. “We welcome the sentencing of Daniel Taylor. Justice has been served,” he said.

“There is no place in Reform for those who perpetrate violence against women and girls, which is why the party took swift action to expel him as soon as he pleaded guilty.”
Kent County Council (KCC) confirmed Taylor has lost his seat as a councillor and a by-election will be held. A spokesperson said: “KCC has declared a vacancy in the Cliftonville ward following the disqualification of Daniel Taylor as a councillor as of February 20 2026.
“A by-election will be held within 35 days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays) of the council’s declaration. KCC will publish the Notice of Election when arrangements have been finalised.”
