Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a body was found in a park.

Northumbria Police say they went to a grassy area off Shipcote Lane in Gateshead at 6.10am on Sunday and found a dead 54-year-old man, who looked as if he had been attacked.

Two suspects – aged 39 and 33 – have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are in custody. Police said that extra officers will be in the area while inquiries are carried out, adding: “Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this terrible time. Thanks to those of you who've already come forward with information to assist us.”
