White people carry out 14 times more racially motivated attacks in region described as ‘no-go area’ by Daily Mail

Asian British people are 10 times more likely to be the victim of a racially-motivated hate crime than a white person in England and Wales with white people committing 14 times more racial and religious attacks in one area described as 'no go' by the Daily Mail.

Research by NationalWorld also found that the perpetrators of attacks were overwhelmingly white.

Stats from the Home Office showed that 1% of Asian-British people were subject to a hate crime due to their race, compared to 0.1% of white people in the UK in 2019/2020.

In 2019, 82% of those prosecuted for hate crimes were white, compared to 6.8% Asian, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stats from 2020

The findings come after the release of a widely criticised report by the Daily Mail which labelled several British towns as “no-go areas for white people”.

The report made a number of spurious claims, including suggestions that Bradford, which has a Christian population of over 45%, would be an “apartheid city within 30 years”.

Other cities and towns described as no-go areas for white people included Bolton, Dewsbury and Blackburn.

Data from the Home Office published in October 2020 suggested that 0.0% of Christians were the subject of a hate crime due to their religion, compared to 0.8% of Muslims in 2019/20.

White people carry out 14 times more attacks in ‘no-go area’

In West Yorkshire – the police force area for Bradford and Dewsbury – from 2016-2020, 777 white people were convicted of racial or religious crimes, compared to 101 Asian people (not including Chinese people), according to Ministry of Justice figures.

A 2020 report by the Racial Justice Network suggested that “black, brown and migrant communities [live] in a state of fear and anxiety and general distrust in the police” which may have resulted in hate crimes being under-reported.

Fourteen-times more white people were convicted of the same crimes over the same period in Greater Manchester – the police force area of Didsbury and Bolton - compared to Asian people.

In Lancashire (Blackburn), 11 times more white people were convicted of religious or racially motivated hate crimes when compared to Asian people.

In 2019 and 2020 there were 1,115 Islamophobic hate crimes in London alone, according to the CPS.

The London borough with the highest number of Islamophobic hate crime offences in 2019/20 was Westminster with 104 followed by Tower Hamlets (103) and Newham (66)

The national picture

In 2020, according to the Ministry of Justice’s quarterly criminal justice statistics, there were 5,199 racially or religiously motivated hate crime cases prosecuted in courts in England and Wales, and 3,976 convictions.

The ethnicity of the offender was recorded for 3,053 prosecutions and 2,299 convictions.

Of the prosecutions, 2,416 were of white people (80%) and 1,846 (80%) of the convictions were white people.

This compares to Asian people (not including Chinese people) who accounted for 215 prosecutions (7%) and 161 convictions (7%).

According to the 2011 census, Asian people (including Chinese) make up 7.5% of England and Wales’ population with white people making up 86% of the population, although these figures may have changed in the past 10 years.
