Peter Kubik: Metal guitarist and founding member of black metal band Abigor dies aged 49

Peter Kubik, the founding guitarist of black metal band Abigor, has died at the age of 49, the band has confirmed.

The Austrian band confirmed the Kubik’s death on social media with a post on Monday, September 2. The statement read: “PK 1975 - 2024 immortal in his legacy - blood (family), soil (home) and monuments of Black Metal art.”

The band’s post also suggested that Kubik had taken his own life, saying that he “walked through the gate by his own hand, through his own will”. An official cause of death has not been confirmed.

The remaining members of Abigor have requested that fans respect their privacy at this time, saying: “Keep your respectful distance to the bereaved for now.”

Kubik formed the black metal outfit in 1993 alongside drummer-guitarist Thomas Tannenberger. Tannenberger left the band in 1999, before later re-joining in 2006, making Kubik the longest serving member of Abigor. Fans of the genre recognise the band as creating some of black metal’s classic albums including ‘Opus IV’ and ‘Supreme Immortal Art’. The band’s albums were released under the iconic metal record company Napalm Records.

Fans have shared their condolences with the members of Abigor, with one saying underneath their announcement post: “Condolences. His 90s output was legendary.”

Another added: “I remember hearing “Scars in the Landscape of God” for the first time on the Blackend compilation cd, back in the 90’s. Took me to other dimensions as a youngster. Thank you for “Supreme Immortal Art” too, a masterpiece. My sincere condolences. RIP”
