9. Dog walking rules
Some public areas in England and Wales are covered by Public Spaces Protection Orders which may require owners to keep dogs on a lead, stop dogs from going to certain areas, such as farmland or part of a park, clear up after dogs, and place a limit on the number of dogs you can have with you. Ignoring these rules could result in a £100 on the spot fine with a Fixed Penalty Notice, or up to £1,000 if the case goes to court. Photo: Shutterstock

10. Dog breeders need a license
Under the Animal Welfare Act 1999, breeders in England and Scotland who breed five or more litters per year must be licensed by their local authority. In Wales and Northern Ireland, breeders who breed three or more litters within a 12 month period must be licensed. Photo: DIBYANGSHU SARKAR
