Celebrities and their surprise baby announcements - including Riley Keough and Gemma Arterton

Gemma Arterton announced that she welcomed her first child with husband Rory Keenan back in December. However, the couple only confirmed they were expecting their first child together on November 4, 2022 when she displayed her baby bump for the first time at the Raindance Film Festival awards, meaning she was 8 months pregnant when.

The 37-year-old actress revealed the happy news during an interview  on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 Breakfast show over a month after giving birth. Arterton said: "We are very very happy, he was born just before Christmas. A little Christmas elf."

More than ever, celebrities are going to extra lengths to keep their personal life private and many are choosing to stay out of the spotlight during their pregnancies. So, which other celebrities have managed to keep their impending arrivals a secret?

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner famously kept her pregnancy a secret both times round. There was much speculation as to why the star had been quiet on instagram and rarely seen out in public. She was able to hide her pregnancy with her daughter for nine months before confirming her birth with a video in 2018.

Riley Keough

Riley Keough, daughter of the late Lisa-Marie Presley, quietly welcomed a daughter in 2022. No one even knew she was pregnant. Her husband, Ben Smith-Peterson, confirmed the news while delivering a eulogy on behalf of his wife at Lisa-Marie’s memorial service.

"I hope I can love my daughter the way you loved me, the way you loved my brother and my sisters" Smith-Peterson read as part of an emotional letter to Presley written by Keough.

Mindy Kaling

In 2020, news broke that Mindy has welcomed her second bundle of joy, Spencer. She confirmed the news during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She told the late night host: "I’m telling it for the first time now, it feels so strange. But I gave birth to a baby boy on September 3”.

Colbert replied: "No one even knew you were pregnant!" to which the actress said: "I know! I know! This is news to a lot of people. It’s true."

Mindy also has a daughter named Katherine, who’s birth was also a surprise to fans. Much speculation has been made about who the father of her children are, as the star has chosen not to reveal their identity.

Alicia Vikander

Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender have always been fiercely private about their personal life, and it was no different when news broke in 2021 that they had welcomed their first child.

However, Vikander did talk about motherhood with People, saying: "I now have a whole new understanding of life in general. That’s pretty beautiful, and obviously will give a lot to any of my work in the future."

Eva Mendes

While news of Stacey’s fifth child on the way came as a shock to fans, she also revealed that the pregnancy came as a shock to her, and her husband Joe Swash too. The couple share two children Rex, 3, and Rose, 15 months.

She announced the news in December but shocked fans when she revealed that her due date was as soon as a month away. In the comments of her announcement Stacey revealed she didn’t even know she was pregnant until a few months in.

She replied to a comment asking how she didn’t know with her big bump saying: “’I mean I know now... but a few months ago I looked like I’d had a big lunch every now and again.”
