A cruel pet owner, who neglected his dog so badly it had be put down, has been given a ten-year ban.

Jordan Edment, 19, was banned from keeping dogs for ten years after he starved his Pakistani Mastiff dog, Rumple, and failed to take him to the vet.

Animal welfare chiefs were sent to Edement's home after being tipped off by police amid fears Rumple and a bulldog named Butch were being neglected.

Rumple, aged two, was found with all his ribs, spine, and hip bones prominent and he had trouble using all four of his limbs correctly when he was found in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire.

The pooch weighed less than 40kg - around eight to ten kilograms lighter than he should have been - and a high heart rate suggesting dehydration.

After Rumple did not respond to the Scottish SPCA s treatment, he was put to sleep.

Edment pled guilty to failing to provide veterinary treatment and a nutritionally adequate diet and was sentenced to a deprivation order and a ten-year-ban from keeping animals.

‘Skin and bones’

On 7 November 2019, Scotland’s SPCA attended Edment’s property following a complaint of dog neglect to their helpline by Police Scotland, who had attended regarding a separate matter.

Police shared their concerns over the dogs – one who was “skin and bones” while the other was underweight.

Scottish SPCA inspector, Heather Lawson, said: “When we attended, we found Rumple to be in extremely poor health. All his ribs, spine, and hip bones were prominent and he had a hunched posture.

“The second canine, a Johnston’s bulldog type named Butch, was very lean.

"Both dogs were friendly and very excitable. When given a drink of water, both dogs drank vigorously and emptied the entire bowl.”

‘Emaciated condition’

It was further discovered that neither of the dogs were receiving any veterinary treatment.

Lawson added: “We seized both dogs and took them for the immediate veterinary attention they desperately needed.

“Upon examination, Rumple was in an emaciated condition and was malnourished.

"He weighed 39.3kg and should easily be eight to ten kilograms heavier than this.”

Rumple had a faster than normal heart rate, suggesting he was dehydrated. He also had trouble using all four of his limbs correctly – and an altered gait.

“Rumple was caused unnecessary suffering because of Edment failing to seek veterinary care and a lack of nutrition,” Lawson said.

“Butch was found to be around four to five kilograms underweight.”

10-year-ban

Both dogs were taken to a SPCA centre to receive care and ongoing treatment they needed but Rumple’s condition deteriorated and the heartbreaking decision was made to put him to sleep on welfare grounds.

Lawson added: “We’re pleased that Edment has received a ten-year-ban and deprivation order and we hope he seriously reconsiders his ability to care for any animal in the future.

“Butch is still in the care of one of our centres, and this sentencing means we can now find him the loving forever home he deserves."
