It is evidently clear that people are bitter with the new Twitter boss Elon Musk, perhaps best shown recently by a Dave Chappelle crowd booing the world’s current richest man for nearly ‘10 minutes’ in San Francisco.

Elon Musk made an appearance at the comedian’s show on Sunday with the comedian introducing him saying, “ladies and gentlemen make some noise for the richest man in the world.”

Hesitance rang in the air before crowds started showing their dislike for the Tesla CEO by booing him for the best part of 10 minutes.

Elon’s stage appearance in San Francisco comes after he fired 3,700 people (nearly 70% of the workforce) from his new social media platform which he bought for $44 billion in October 2022, with Twitter’s main headquarters located in the city.

As a result, Dave replied to the boos: “It sounds like some of the people you fired are in the audience.”

In light of this, PeopleWorld decided to take a look back at five additional times that Elon Musk was not favoured by many:

Elon Musk dissolving Trust and Safety Council

Before Elon joined Twitter, the social media company created an advisory group of 100 independent civil and human rights organisations to act as watchdogs for hate speech, self-harm and child exploitation on the platform in 2016.

The Trust and Safety Council was said to be meeting with employees about problems on Twitter on Monday night, however, it was alerted by email that the council was being disbanded.

It comes after three members of the group announced that they were resigning as contrary to Elon Musk’s promises to make the ‘safety and wellbeing’ of Twitter users a priority, the platform was in fact declining.

Celebrities quitting Twitter

Actions speak louder than words, and millions of celebrities voiced their opinion of Elon Musk by quitting Twitter after he took the application over in October.

Gigi Hadid, Stephen Fry, Elton John and Whoopi Goldberg are just some of the big names who decided to delete their social media accounts based upon the direction Twitter was heading, citing the new owner as the problem.

Gigi explained on Instagram: “For a long time, but especially with its new leadership, it’s becoming more of a cesspool of hate and bigotry. It’s not a place I want to be a part of.”

While Sir Elton agreed in his last ever Tweet: “All my life I’ve tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world. I’ve decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent change in policy which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked.”

No more staff lunches

In a bid to reduce costs, Elon scrapped free meals for the remaining Twitter staff in San Francisco, after he had fired over half of the employees via email, including CEO Parag Argrawal.

As Elon suggested he was making cuts in line with the low occupancy rates in offices, with the ‘estimated cost per lunch in the past 12 months > $400’, others responded showing their disgust at his decision.

Someone tweeted: “He fired ¾ of the employees. Now he’s planning to starve the rest.”

Insulting President Joe Biden

Elon Musk’s unpopularity grew towards the end of the year, but he was not exempt from hostility in January 2022 as the Tesla CEO insulted the President of the United States, Joe Biden, on Twitter.

The Tweet which read, “Biden is a damp [sock] puppet in human form,” came after Joe Biden met with Tesla’s biggest competitors at the White House to applaud their efforts in curbing carbon pollution with electric vehicles.

Following Elon’s public insult, Tesla’s then-record profits fell by one tenth, ‘slashing Musk’s fortune by $24.5 billion,’ according to Forbes.

Twitter Blue Tick fee and fake accounts

Twitter users were in dismay with Elon Musk after he introduced an $8 subscription fee for the coveted ‘blue tick’ which attributed verification to the profile.

The price, which originally was $20, meant that anyone could purchase a blue tick which resulted in fake accounts being made of large companies such as Nestle, Roblox and Lockheed Martin and making damning posts.

The tick was originally reserved for journalists, high profile celebs and politicians, but as fake verified accounts mushroomed, the share prices of the affected companies dropped.
