With an impressive net worth of $175 billion as the second richest person in the world as of 2023, one would assume that Elon Musk would be living in luxury, however the Tesla and SpaceX CEO lives in a rather ‘modest’ abode.

The Twitter boss once had a gigantic property portfolio to his name with an estimated price tag of $100 million consisting of seven houses, six of which were located in the Bel Air area of Los Angeles while the other was situated in San Francisco close to Twitter HQ.

Elon first bought a seven-bedroom home in the Bel Air neighbourhood in late 2012 for $17 million, a perfect house for his now seven children that he shares with the likes of Grimes, Shivon Zilis and Justine Musk. Fitted out with a tennis court, wine cellar and two-story library, Elon ended up living at the home for almost a decade with two of his sons.

Another mansion in Elon’s property once belonged to actor Gene Wilder, which he subsequently put on the market for $9.5 million.

However, just as his $44bn Twitter takeover shocked a lot of people, Elon revealed in 2020 that he had decided to offload his real estate portfolio and ‘live in no house’, instead choosing to relocate to Texas with his business to focus on his next Mars mission.

The South African born business magnate now reportedly owns a three-bedroom house in Boca Chica, South Texas that he only paid $45,000 for, but notably still does not use this as his main residence.

Instead the 375-square-foot Texan tiny home, built by construction technology company Boxabl, serves as a guest house with Elon even hosting a party there in 2021.

While some may think this was a wise decision to buy the home so close to SpaceX’s launching facility, others believe there are certain darker undertones to his modest purchase as he has plans to develop parts of Texas into a ‘utopian city’.

Architectural Digest reported that entities linked to Elon Musk and his various companies have taken over approximately 3,500 acres of land outside of Austin, Texas with plans to build a town for employees of Elon’s businesses to live in.

The utopia has already been labelled ‘Snailbrook’ as an ode to Musk’s tunnelling company Boring Co. which will have many of its staff live in the Austin-based campus upon completion.
