‘It has come as a big shock’
The baby was delivered last week when the girl, who has not been identified, was more than 30 weeks pregnant. Both mum and baby are said to be doing well.
Her parents did not know she was expecting according to an article in The Sun, and now social services and the council are investigating the circumstances around her pregnancy.
No further details, such as where in the UK the young girl lives and who is taking care of her baby, are known.
A source who knows the family said: “It has come as a big shock.
"She’s now being surrounded by expert help. The main thing is that she and the baby are OK.
“There are questions around why people did not know. That is very worrying.”
Who was the UK’s youngest mum previously?
Prior to this, the UK’s youngest mum was Tressa Middleton who was age 12 when she gave birth in 2006.
Her daughter, who she called Annie and would now be about 15, was later taken into care.
This was after it emerged that the baby had been fathered by Tressa’s own brother, Jason, who had raped her when was just 11 and he was 16.
He was jailed for four years for the crime in 2009 after DNA tests proved he was the baby's father.
He has since been released from prison.
Tressa has gone on to have a second child.
Eight years later, in 2014, a baby was born to a 12-year-old mother and 13-year-old father in the UK, the lowest combined age of parents in Britain.
