Although International Women’s Day (IWD) is believed to have been observed since the early 1900’s, according to the International Women’s Day website, it was not until 2001 that the day was re-ignited. “The IWD website was launched in pretty much a pre-social media world-there was no Facebook to connect and mobilise communities; no Eventbride to publish and promote events; no Instagram, Twitter or TikTok to galvanise collective action.”

Despite going to a highly academic girls school, there was not only no mention of IWD but there was also no assemblies or lessons devoted to inspiring influential women. In many ways, this could be seen as both a positive and negative. Girls at my school were expected to achieve but I felt at the same time we were not encouraged to play to our strengths.

Looking at the 2022 Forbes list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women, there are several well-known faces from the entertainment industry listed in the top 25. PeopleWorld takes a look at some key individuals.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is listed at no.10 of the 2022 Forbes America’s Richest Self-Made Women, with a fortune of $2.6 B. According to Forbes,”Many of the people who knew Oprah as a girl and young woman testify to the fact that she was always driven to become a star and be very rich. For her, wealth was primarily a means of attracting attention.”

In an interview with Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2014, Oprah said that “I am grounded in my own self. Although I could have more shoes, my feet stayed on the ground (although I was wearing better shoes). I could understand that it was really because I was grounded. I work at staying awake.”

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian is listed at no.16 of 2022 Forbes America’s Richest Self-Made Women, with a fortune of £1.8 B. This is largely due to her shapewear company SKIMS, cosmetics and reality TV shows. When asked by the Wall Street Journal if she is a workaholic, Kim replied: I know, I know, I am. I get a lot of my work ethic from my dad.”

Kim Kardashian’s father, the late Robert Kardashian has had a huge impact on Kim’s life and continues to do so. On his birthday this year, she shared a tribute to him on her social media.

“It’s been 20 years since we’ve celebrated your birthday here on earth. But I will take it because I had the best dad in the whole world and I am so lucky I had 22 years with you!”

Rihanna

Rihanna is listed as no.21 of 2022 Forbes America’s Richest Self-Made Women, with a fortune of $1,4B. Rihanna clearly had quite the 2022 and if 2023 is anything to go by, things look to be going equally as well, if not better. She performed at the Super Bowl LV11 Halftime Show where she revealed that she was pregnant with her second child.

Rihanna is also set to return to Puma this year with a Fenty X Puma collaboration that could see her potentially design a maternity range. She is certainly hot property right now as she appeared on the cover of British Vogue’s March issue alongside her partner A$AP Rocky and baby.
