Six months after West Ham's former co-chairman David Gold passed away following a short illness, his childhood club sealed the Conference League win against Fiorentina and grabbed their first piece of silverware since the 1980s.

The Hammers' manager David Moyes paid tribute to the late 86-year-old when celebrating the team's victory after Jarrod Bowen scored the winning goal by saying: "I've got a club who have incredibly supported me and at times, could have been different. I think this would also be a good time to mention...the Gold family who David Gold obviously can’t be here, we lost Jacqueline as well, but the British reporters will know what I’m talking about. I think it’s really important that we remember David Gold here as well because this would’ve been incredibly special for him as well."

David Gold, who ultimately found success in the world of business by owning several sports newspapers, puzzle books, property and what would turn out to be the Ann Summers franchise, had a long-standing connection to the club way before he became joint chairman with David Sullivan in 2010 following his departure from the board of Birmingham City.

The late businessman grew up across the street from the Boleyn Ground and even appeared in the club's junior level teams. Although he faced some backlash when taking over the claret and blue over a decade ago, it has been reported that David Gold always rooted for Moyes to lead the Hammers to victory.

As Moyes mentioned, David Gold passed away just a couple of months before his daughter Jacqueline, who transformed her father's once small business into a multi-million pound empire, changing Ann Summers from four ‘top end’  sex shops with a ‘seedy image’ into a franchise that empowers women.

Jacqueline, who tragically passed away at the age of 62 after battling stage four breast cancer for seven years, became the 16th richest woman in Britain with a net worth of £470 million after she joined the company at age 19.

The Ann Summers CEO paid tribute to the Stepney-born businessman who initially bought Ann Summers in 1972, sharing pictures of them over the years with the caption, “We will always be so proud of you Dad," in addition to many reels with the West Ham football team in his memory.

Despite Jacqueline working with her Dad for nearly five decades (since 1979) and their relationship becoming close towards the end of their lives, the father and daughter were not always on good terms.

It was reported that David initially wanted a son, with the BBC saying the West Ham boss even ‘wept’ when Jacqueline was born in 1960.

The family’s relationship became strained when Jacqueline was 12-years-old as her parents separated leading to David and his daughter becoming pretty distant.

However, as Jacqueline started to make waves with Ann Summers, the pair began to grow closer due to their shared goals, ultimately ending up with David as Jacqueline's 'hero'.

Jacqueline previously said: “I think we went from having a very strange relationship, or very distant relationship, to suddenly becoming really, really close because all of a sudden we had something in common. And that was passion.”
