They say that rebound relationships are a bad idea. They can last anywhere from three months to one year and the primary focus is to distract yourself from the breakup of your last partner.
Rebound lust certainly seems to be the case for the latest lovebirds to be snapped at a NBA game together - model Emily Ratajkowski and comedian Pete Davidson. She’s even apparently described him as a ‘good rebound’.
Emily (31) was married to movie producer Sebastian Bear-McClard until they split in July amid rumours he had cheated on her. The former couple have one son together. Pete (29) was in a relationship with Kim Kardasahian, who was also on the rebound from Kanye West when they began dating in October 2021, just a few months after becoming single.
Last week, a source told Entertainment Tonight that Emily, “is doing well and getting more adjusted to her life as a single mom since her divorce.
“She is dating and having fun with it. She's in a good headspace. Emily has been seeing Pete and thinks he is super charismatic, funny, and a good rebound,” the source added.
“It is casual between them, but she likes that they’re comfortable with each other and have a good time together. Things are going well for her,” the source said.
Whether they last a few months, a year or go the distance, it reminded us of a few other celebrity rebounds.
Mila Kunis was rebounding from a long-term relationship with Macaulay Culkin (2002 to 2011) and Ashton was in the process of getting a divorce from Demi Moore (they were married from 2005 until 2011). The pair had starred on That 70s Show when they were teenagers and Ashton was even Mila’s first ever kiss.
They reconnected in January 2012 and Ashton invited Mila to a housewarming party he was having. They ended up casually seeing each other until Mila realised she was developing deeper feelings.
After a few months of casually seeing each other, Mila decided she wasn’t happy with the relationship as it stood. "I was like, you know what, I actually care about you. I don't want to mess anything up so I'm just going to walk away before it becomes too much," Mila told Marc Maron.
Before she had a chance to end the relationship for good, Ashton asked her to move in with him. "If we just paid attention to these movies [we did], we should know s--- like this does not work out in real life," Mila said on the 2018 "WTF" episode.
The couple are now married and parents to two children together. The rebound theory didn't go quite to plan.
Other celebrity couples who have rebounded include Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, who starred together in The Break Up. They dated from 2005 until 2006, with Aniston dating Vaughn not long after her high profile split from her first husband Brad Pitt.
Aniston seemed grateful for their brief entanglement. “I call Vince my defibrillator,” she told Vogue in December 2008. “He literally brought me back to life."
Other couples include Scarlet Johansson and Sean Penn, the two actors dated briefly in 2011 following her split from her first husband Ryan Reynolds.
One of the biggest upsides to being in a rebound relationship is the confidence-boost it provides. This certainly seems to be the case for Emily and Pete. Whether it's good PR, or something more, the duo are enjoying time together after a difficult few months.
