Swedish YouTuber PewDiePie told his 111 million subscribers that he and his wife of four years Marzia Kjellberg are expecting their first child.

The controversial content creator, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, announced that the pair who have been in a relationship since 2011 found out they were going to become parents in November but shared the news on Sunday [5 February].

Felix said: “I’ve been keeping a secret from you guys, and that is, I’m going to be a dad. I’m just so thankful everything’s been going well so far.”

The video which showed the couple watching the ultrasound scan and reading the pregnancy test, ‘broke the internet’ after amassing 680,000 views on YouTube in one hour.

PewDiePie semi-retired from the platform in 2019, following both a hugely successful career in being the most-subscribed channel for several years, but also being faced with numerous controversies.

Disney severed ties with the gaming creator in 2017 after Felix had to respond to huge allegations of anti-Semitism and racism in his videos.

Despite being semi-retired, Felix has continued to post videos to his channel including gaming videos and vlogs about life in Japan.

While Felix hails from Gothenburg in Sweden and his wife content creator Marzia comes from Arzignano, Italy, the pair moved to Japan after living in Brighton, England for nearly a decade.

With the mix of nationalities, fans are questioning which citizenship baby PewDiePie will have.

If the baby is born in Japan, they could have dual nationality, holding both Japanese and foreign nationalities, and then would have to choose which they want to identify as before a certain age - in Japan, it would be before they turn 20 years old.

However, if they choose to return to Sweden, Felix’s baby will be eligible to be a Swedish citizen from birth due to her father’s nationality.
