It is no wonder when the news broke that Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark were moving to the US that it was immediately dubbed the Danish Royal family’s own ‘Megxit.’ Although Prince Joachim and Princess Marie have not decided to step back as senior members of the royal family, Prince Joachim’s mother Queen Margrethe 11 removed the children of their royal titles six months ago.

Prince Joachim is moving to the States to take up the role of defence industry attache at the Danish embassy in Washington DC. “I am proud that I still get the opportunity to represent Denmark internationally in the area of security and defence,” he said. “Transatlantic cooperation is a high-priority area, and I am honoured that they have found me qualified for the task.”

Although Prince Joachim is obviously delighted with his new role, one cannot forget that he was less enamoured with his mother’s decision to remove the titles of his four children. Prince Joachim told Danish news outlet Ekstra Bladet the following: “We are all very sad. It’s never fun to see your children being harmed. They have been put in a situation that they do not understand.”

Prince Joachim is expected to take up his new position on September 1. His mother Queen Margrethe attended the late Queen Elizabeth 11’s funeral in London and tested positive for Covid days afterward. At 82 years old, she is the continent’s longest-serving monarch and Europe’s only reigning queen.

Queen Margrethe and the late Queen Elizabeth 11 were believed to have been close and she sent a message of condolence to King Charles 111 when she passed away. In the note, she said: ”Your mother was very important to me and my family. She was a towering figure among the European monarchs and a great inspiration to us all. We shall miss her terribly.”

Although Prince Joachim and Princess Marie will be based in Washington DC, it will be interesting to see if their paths will ever cross with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. If they do, I am sure the couples will have a lot to discuss!
