The billionaire head of Britain’s wealthiest family, Srichand P Hindjua, has passed away at the age of 87 after battling a form of dementia called the Lewy Body disease.

His two daughters Shanu and Vinoo announced his death on Wednesday, stating that he ‘passed away peacefully’ in London where he owned property near to Buckingham Palace and the Old War Office in Whitehall.

Known as S.P, the patriarch established the Hinduja Group from a small family enterprise that began a century ago in India, into a company spanning 38 countries, alongside his three brothers Gopichand, Prakash and Ashok.

The family’s collective wealth grew to £28.4 billion last year when they topped the 2022 Sunday Times Rich List for a fourth time generating their wealth from the oil, healthcare, banking and media industries.

Despite being the wealthiest family in Britain and having the late Queen Elizabeth as a neighbour, SP’s death comes after a feud with his three brothers.

SP’s daughter Vinoo filed a lawsuit on his behalf several years prior, against his brothers disputing a 2014 letter signed by the family that detailed their assets were shared and controlled equally.

The argument and letter stemmed from their father’s maxim ‘everything belongs to everyone and nothing belongs to anyone’ which SP felt had no ‘legal effect’ therefore claimed sole ownership of the Hinduja Bank in Switzerland.

However, the bump in the road turned out for a somewhat happy ending as the four brothers collectively decided to end the dispute last year when SP’s condition worsened.

As mentioned, SP spent most of his time in London since the 1970s after his business was run out of Iran, and came to call the late Elizabeth II a neighbour after purchasing the 67,000 square foot 18th Century Carlton House Terrace property in 2013, reportedly priced at $500 million per Forbes.

SP lived there with his wife Madhu and was invited to royal banquets at Buckingham Palace on several occasions with his family where he would bring his own vegetarian food.
