Coronation 2023; who made their debut on the balcony of Buckingham Palace ahead of the Royal photo op?

 Looks like the Trooping of the Colour seems to be the most popular occasion where Royals have made their Buckingham Palace balcony debut.

The appearance on the balcony has been a matter of contention recently after Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan Markle seceding from Royal life; there are those who believe that the rules state non-working Royal members should not be allowed to stand on the balcony, while others have a bit more of a softer stance and feel that Harry, the son of the newly crowned King, is blood and therefore an allowance should be made.

Harry has long been a featured face on the balcony of Buckingham Palace throughout his official Royal duties with the Palace and long before those duties in his adulthood - he made his debut on the balcony in 1988 during that year’s Trooping of the Colour. His children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, made their debuts on the balcony during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

All eyes once again will be pointed upwards from The Mall towards Buckingham Palace, and if the suggestions that Harry has been invited to Buckingham Palace for the luncheon, could King Charles III break tradition and allow his youngest son to appear alongside his family later this afternoon?

The Royal debuts on Buckingham Palace’s balcony since Queen Victoria’s reign

  • Queen Victoria - The first monarch to live in Buckingham Palace, Queen Victoria made her first balcony appearance in 1851 for the opening of the Great Exhibition.
  • King Edward VII - Edward VII appeared on the balcony for the first time in 1902, following his coronation.
  • King George V - George V first appeared on the balcony in 1911, following his coronation.
  • Queen Mary - George V's wife, Queen Mary, made her first balcony appearance in 1911 alongside her husband.
  • King Edward VIII - Edward VIII appeared on the balcony in 1936, following his accession to the throne. However, he abdicated later that year and never appeared on the balcony as king again.
  • King George VI - George VI first appeared on the balcony in 1937, following his coronation.
  • Queen Elizabeth II - The late monarch, Elizabeth II, made her first balcony appearance in 1953, following her coronation. She has since made numerous appearances on the balcony for various occasions, including Trooping the Colour and royal weddings.
  • Prince Philip - The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, first appeared on the balcony alongside Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
  • The then-Prince Charles - Prince Charles, now King, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, made his first balcony appearance in 1958 for the Trooping the Colour ceremony.
  • Princess Anne - Queen Elizabeth II's daughter, Princess Anne, made her first balcony appearance in 1964 for the Trooping the Colour ceremony.
  • Prince Andrew - Queen Elizabeth II's third child, Prince Andrew, first appeared on the balcony in 1971 for the Trooping the Colour ceremony.
  • Prince Edward - Queen Elizabeth II's youngest child, Prince Edward, made his first balcony appearance in 1984 for the Trooping the Colour ceremony.
  • Prince William - The eldest son of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, Prince William made his first balcony appearance in 1984 for Trooping the Colour.
