Who is Omid Scobie? A look at who the royal author is and his alleged 'friendship' with Harry and Meghan

A certain royal editor Mr Omid Scobie confesses to being one of the few journalists who write about the Firm without bias and ‘spin free’ despite some saying he favours Harry and Meghan due to his help on the 2020 biography Finding Freedom.

Trusting his impartiality towards the royal family, Scobie has previewed his next book entitled ‘Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival’ claiming that he writes about the good as well as the bad while also revealing moments the monarchy should be ‘ashamed of’.

While the upcoming book gives Avengers' vibes with its title, could Omid Scobie’s views be ‘ironclad’ with the Express claiming Meghan has approved chapters through a third-party source or could his alleged ‘close relationship’ with the Sussexes have swayed the ‘vision’?  PeopleWorld takes a look.

Who is Omid Scobie?

Born in Wales in July 1981, Omid Scobie is a British journalist and writer who rose to prominence through his work on the royal family.

After growing up in Oxford, Omid attended Magdalen College School before studying journalism at the London College of Communication.

The 41-year-old travelled across the pond for one of his first substantial journalism jobs after a brief stint at a British celebrity magazine, being named as the European bureau chief at Us Weekly.

After a decade at Us Weekly, Scobie became the royal editor for Harper’s Bazaar while also taking up presenting slots on Good Morning America and the broadcaster’s podcast HeirPod. 

How close is Omid Scobie to Harry and Meghan?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship with the British press has been tumultuous over the past few years, not only seen by their move to Montecito to get away from papers but also Prince Harry’s recent court case against the Mirror Group Newspapers.

However, one journalist’s name that has been linked sympathetically to the Duke and Duchess since 2020 is Omid Scobie after he co-authored a biography of the couple called Finding Freedom, with American journalist Carolyn Durand.

Mr Scobie offered another insight into his alleged ‘personal relationship’ with the couple when he testified on the fourth day of Harry’s case in London’s High Court saying he learned of the MGN’s ‘immoral’ phone hacking when he was completing work experience at the firm.

When Scobie was confronted whether his view stemmed from his ‘close relationship’, he replied: “I don't have a close relationship [with the Duke and Duchess] personally…I don't know the Duke on that level, I don't have his phone number, I've never socialised with him before.”

The Harpers Bazaar journalist added that if anything, his testimony actually could make his life more ‘difficult’ due to newspapers branding him as Harry and Meghan’s ‘mouthpiece’ or ‘cheerleader’.

Omid Scobie's next book 'Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival’ is set for release on 21 November 2023.
