In the statement, Ms Johnson said the brother or sister to their first child Wilfred was due to arrive “this Christmas”.

The 33-year-old added: “At the beginning of the year, I had a miscarriage which left me heartbroken. “I feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant again but I’ve also felt like a bag of nerves.”

Ms Johnson said she was hoping for a "rainbow baby": a term used to describe a child born after a miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death.

The child will be Ms Johnson’s second, while the PM has a contested number of other children.

Ms Johnson opened up about “fertility issues” in her post on social media.

What’s been said

"Fertility issues can be really hard for many people, particularly when on platforms like Instagram it can look like everything is only ever going well,” Ms Johnson wrote in the post.

"I found it a real comfort to hear from people who had also experienced loss so I hope that in some very small way sharing this might help others too,” she added.

The marriage made Mr Johnson the first PM to marry while in office for almost 200 years.

The marriage is the PM’s third, having previously been married to Marina Wheeler and Allegra Mostyn-Owen.

The PM has four children with Wheeler, though much speculation has been made about further children he may have fathered.
