Following Boris Johnson’s announcement on Friday that he would resign with immediate effect, the former PM has sent a letter to the chancellor to step down
There is ‘no going back now’ for Boris Johnson as the former prime minister has sent a formal letter to the chancellor of the exchequer, currently the Right Honourable Jeremy Hunt MP, to confirm his resignation as a member of the parliament, after announcing his plans to stand down with 'immediate effect' last Friday.
Mr Johnson revealed before the weekend that he was stepping down ahead of the Covid-19 inquiry that sees Baroness Hallett look into whether the disgraced PM misled the government during Coronavirus lockdowns from Tuesday 13 June.
While it may cause some confusion that Boris has formally resigned today after his announcement last week, Sky News’ chief political correspondent Jon Craig explained that “if an MP resigns from the House of Commons mid-term, mid-parliament, they have to apply for what is called an Office of Profit under the Crown, which means a paid office - and means they are disqualified from becoming an MP.”
Boris Johnson’s resignation not only comes after former MP for Selby and Ainsty Nigel Adams has followed suit but also as Boris’s resignation honours list is up for debate by current PM Rishi Sunak.
All eyes turn to Nadine Dorries, who was denied a peerage on Johnson's Honours List, to see if she will formally resign to Jeremy Hunt too after stepping down last week.
