Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso has dissolved the opposition-controlled parliament after the stage was set for either the party to be booted out or the Conservative leader himself, as he faces an impeachment trial.

The 67-year-old, who has served as the 47th president since May 2021, has been accused of turning a blind eye to alleged embezzlement and was at risk of being sent to pack his bags just two years after being voted in if the opposition received 92 votes.

However, before the parliament was able to set any action in motion, Lasso used a constitutional clause nicknamed ‘mutual death’ to disband the National Assembly thereby leaving him to rule Ecuador by decree for up to six months before the next election.

‘Mutual death’ was created in 2008 but had never been used until Lasso as it brought the danger of protests from opposition groups.

Lasso’s impeachment trial and potential protests seem to echo that of Donald Trump’s and the infamous January 6 Capitol Riots.

Former US president Donald Trump is currently leading the race for 2024’s Republican presidential nomination, therefore could Lasso turn his luck around? Here’s a look at his family and net worth as he prepares to rule by decree.

In 1970, Guillermo Lasso met María de Lourdes Alcívar, an Ecuadorian socialite, and the pair ended up tying the knot in 1980.

Not only have Lasso and Alcívar worked as a team at home caring for their five children namely María de Lourdes, Juan, Guillermo Enrique, Santiago and María de las Mercedes, but they were both instrumental in establishing the political party Creating Opportunities.

Having worked as a businessman prior to his political career, leading Ecuador’s Coca-Cola operations, acting as CEO for Banco Guayaquil and sitting on the board of sustainable development organisations, Lasso has amassed a sizable net worth.

Adding his presidential salary which stands at just over $77,000 a year, reports suggest Lasso’s net worth is somewhere between $1-$5 million range, with one publication stating that he is worth $40 million.
