Oscar Wilde said that ‘with age comes wisdom,’ and for Joe Biden this may serve in his favour as he announces his bid to run in the 2024 Presidential campaign at the age of 80.

For reference, if Joe is successful in his campaign and continues in his role as President of the United States for the next four years, he would be 86-years-old at the end of his time in office, which is quite an impressive age to be running America.

Over the past couple of years that Biden has been sitting in the White House since winning out over Donald Trump, his age has been a hot topic as he currently holds the record for the US’ oldest president after being inaugurated at the age of 78.

Several surveys have been conducted debating whether Biden is too old to serve as President let alone run for the 2024 election and some forecast that his age will be an ‘attack line’ for competing parties.

However, Joe Biden and his supporters may have some faith as the 80-year-old is not the oldest politician to have served across the world - PeopleWorld takes a look.

Perhaps the oldest politician to ever serve was Malaysia’s prime minister Mahathir Mohamad who was in power at the age of 95 and only stepped down from his second stint as PM in 2020. He originally served in office for 22 years from 1981 to 2003 before returning as PM in 2018.

While Mahathir served just under 25 years in office in Malaysia, Cameroon’s president Paul Biya, commonly known as The Sphinx, was in power for four decades and celebrated his 87th birthday while in power.

Even though Americans are worried about Joe Biden’s age, Laos’ communist President Bounnhang Vorachith was elected at the age of 79 and ruled until he was 84.

African country leaders have some of the oldest ages despite the young population considering Cameroon’s president as mentioned before, Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhar, 80, who was re-elected in 2015 and Guinea’s former president Alpha Conde who ended his term in 2021 at the age of 83.

Lastly, Joe Biden is far from being the oldest politician as Lebanon’s former leader stepped down last year at an impressive age of 88 and the Supreme Leader of Iran, namely Ali Khamenei, turned 84 a couple of days ago.
