Rishi Sunak has become the UK's fifth prime minister in just over 6 years.

After meeting King Charles III to form a new goverment, Mr Sunak's premiership officially began after Liz Truss' time as the shortest-serving prime minister ended.

Ms Truss spoke outside Downing Street and said 'better days lie ahead' as she marked the end of her tumultuous time leading the nation.

Mr Sunak has made history as the first prime minister from a non-white background and the first Hindu prime minister.

After his historic appointment, he spoke at the lectern outside No 10 and said: "Right now our country is facing a profound economic crisis.

"I will place economic stability and confidence at the heart of this Government's agenda.

"This will mean difficult decisions to come.

"I will unite our country, not with words, but with action. Trust is earned and I will earn yours."

He cited the environment, border control and levelling up as areas where his Government will focus.

After meeting with King Charles this morning, attention now turns to who will enter Prime Minster Sunak's first Cabinet.

Mr Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, the daughter of the Indian software billionaire who founded Infosys.

In recent months, much has been made of Mr Sunak and his wife's combined wealth which is estimated to be over £700 million.

This makes him arguably the richest MP in the Commons and has added to controversy around his wife's non-domiciled status in the UK and how this impacts on tax arrangements.

However, Mr Sunak has since publicly said that his wife's status of residence in the UK has now changed.

A busy morning in Westminster also saw Liz Truss address the nation - who Mr Sunak paid tribute to despite saying "some mistakes were made".

She said: "From my time as prime minister, I am more convinced than ever that we need to be bold and confront the challenges that we face.

"I believe in the British people and I know that brighter days lie ahead."
