Sir Keir Starmer becomes subject of internet jokes after 'sausages' slip in speech on Gaza hostages
Sir Keir Starmer became the subject of internet jokes after a slip of the tongue in his speech at the Labour Party conference, where he mistakenly said "sausages" instead of "hostages" while discussing the ongoing war in Gaza.
The gaffe quickly circulated on social media, prompting a wave of memes and light-hearted commentary about the prime minister.
In his speech, Starmer called for de-escalation between Lebanon and Israel and urged for a ceasefire in Gaza. He said: "I call again for restraint and de-escalation at the border between Lebanon and Israel. Again, all parties to pull back from the brink.”

He also emphasised the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, saying: "I call again for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the return of the sausages...hostages, and a recommitment to the two-state solution."
One parody account said: “This is humiliating. I will have this taken down from the internet. I was just thinking about what I had for breakfast!”. Another commented: “Can we have a return of REAL sausages please. Sausages without filler, I am talking just meat and spices.” One wrote: How can you even mix those words up?”
Despite the online humour, Starmer's speech aimed to address serious international issues, including his message to the UN General Assembly later that day. He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression and reiterated Labour's stance on a two-state solution in the Middle East.
