Drivers have been warned that there is around 45 minutes delays on the busy motorway, coupled with around six miles of congestion. Drivers have been advised to follow a diversion route to avoid as much road disruption as possible.

Those heading for the diversion route should follow the hollow square symbol on road signs, which will leave the M1 at J28 before using the A38 and the A610 before rejoining the M1 at J26.
