M3 closed after "serious" incident: Surrey Police and National Highways tell motorists to expect a long wait

A “serious” incident has closed a major motorway with motorists in the area told to ‘expect a long wait’.

Drivers are being warned of delays after a "serious" incident on the M3 through Surrey. Police and National Highways said the motorway was closed between junctions 4 for Farnborough and 3 for Bracknell and told motorists to expect a long wait.

"If you're caught within the closure, then we have now begun the process of turning vehicles around from the back of the queue," a National Highways spokesperson said. "Please await instruction."

Surrey Police are on the scene, with the eastbound carriageway closed off to vehicles and the spokesperson adding they expected the route to "remain closed throughout the morning".

A diversion is in place, marked by Solid Diamond signs, which advises drivers to:

  • Exit the M4 eastbound at J4 and take the 1st exit at the roundabout onto the A331 towards Reading/Wokingham
  • Continue to the next roundabout (The Meadows) and take the 4th exit to join the A30/London Road towards Staines/Cameberley
  • Remain on the A30 for approximately 5 miles to the roundabout with "Grove End" at Windlesham
  • Take the 3rd exit to join Grove End and then follow round to join the A322 south.
  • Remain on the A322 south to reach J3 of the M3 and continue your journey

"If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time," National Highways added. "Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

As well as Surrey Police, the ambulance was also on the scene, they added.
