Motorists have been warned of major delays following a ‘substantial’ lorry fire on the M62.

National Highways said the eastbound of Junction 20 near Rochdale and Oldham to Junction 24 near Huddersfield and Halifax in West Yorkshire has been closed following the incident, causing delays of up to one hour.

The traffic service said: “ROAD CLOSED @WYFRS (West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service) continue to manage the fire. They are not happy to allow traffic eastbound to run past scene or for the 2 lanes on the westbound to be reopened at this time.”

West Yorkshire Police and National Highways officers are also in attendance. It added: “Delays of 60 mins reported approach to the closure and expect delays with slow traffic on the diversion route. “2 lanes (of 3) are also closed westbound past the scene due to drifting smoke. This is causing a delay of 60 mins on the westbound carriageway.”

According to National Highways, normal traffic conditions are expected to return between 7.15pm and 7.30pm. Diversion routes are currently in place.
