400,000 extra women missed their smear tests during the pandemic - as charity says it expects a rise in cervical cancer cases - digital front page

As the NHS races to vaccinate millions of Brits from coronavirus, 4.7 million people with cervixes in the UK have not been adequately screened for cervical cancer.

NationalWorld can now reveal that, in addition to the average number of women who miss their smear test, a further 400,000 are thought to have missed their appointments.

As charities raise awareness of the illness during Cervical cancer awareness week, a leading charity has expressed its fears that the lack of continuity in examinations throughout the pandemic will mean more females will inevitably die from cervical cancer.

The coverage rate for cervical screening is now at 69.6%, compared to 72% a year ago. The target is 80%.
