Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu: who is the This Is Why I Resist author who clashed with Piers Morgan on GMB?

Another fiery debate has erupted on this morning's edition (8 March) of ITV’s Good Morning Britain (GMB).

Always divisive host Piers Morgan has this time clashed with political and women’s rights activist Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, during a discussion on the fallout from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.

It's not the first time the pair have verbally sparred on the show, and Dr Mos-Shogbamimu wasted no time in tearing apart Morgan over his comments on Meghan Markle in recent weeks.

Who is Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu?

Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu is a political and women’s rights activist, a lawyer and the founder of Women in Leadership, which publishes content focused on women's interests to inspire leadership journeys.

Her website states she has “taught intersectional feminism to female refugees and asylum seekers”, scrutinised government policies “from a gender and diversity inclusion perspective”, and co-organised women's marches and social campaigns.

She recently released an acclaimed book – This is Why I Resist: Don't Define My Black Identity – in which she “digs down into the deep roots of racism and anti-blackness in the UK and the US.”

The book takes real life modern day examples of racism to show the reader the many different forms such discrimination can take, from more ‘obvious’ shows of hatred, to more ‘subtle’ symptoms of prejudice.

The book “offers no sugar-coated comfort”, and its blurb says where other books “take White people by the hand to help them negotiate issues of race”, This Is Why I Resist “challenges and asks WHEN will White people progress on race inclusion.”

What happened on GMB?

Morgan started relatively safely, asking Mos-Shogbamimu simply: "What is your reaction to that interview?"

Dr Mos-Shogbamimu responded by drawing attention to Morgan’s impassioned rants on the matter (the presenter has Tweeted about Markle nearly 60 times in recent weeks, according to Joe.co.uk), which had played out over the hour that GMB had been broadcasting up to that point.

“Let me give my reaction to you Piers," she said, “every rant you have given in the last hour, honestly, you are such a liar and a disgrace."

“You trash me every time you come on,” replied Piers – the pair recently butted heads over the much-anticipated interview a couple of weeks ago, with Mos-Shogbamimu branding Morgan a “petty, petulant, fragile man baby” – but the doctor would not be interrupted.

"You bring up coverage about Harry and Meghan when they got married and engaged,” she said, “but you conveniently forget the other coverage… before they were married, between their engagement and their wedding day.

"You conveniently forget Prince Harry spoke out in November 2016 of the racist undertones of the British media coverage. By all means let's applaud the Queen when she does something right, but also let's talk about when she does something wrong."

Morgan was particularly offended by the Queen’s drop into the conversation – as part of the Oprah interview, Markle said the Queen “has always been wonderful to me” – and said, "I think what you just said about the Queen is disgusting."

"I think you are disgusting!" replied Dr Mos-Shogbamimu, as the interview’s focus turned to the revelation that a member of the royal family allegedly showed concerns about how "dark" Meghan’s son Archie's skin would be.

Morgan claimed that "We don't know the context of this supposed racism", but Dr Mos-Shogbamimu said, "People like you will continue to lie about them. You lie about them every single day!"

"I don't lie about them, I see straight through them!” replied Morgan.
