Cat’s charred remains found on Portobello Beach near Edinburgh, says Scottish SPCA

The charred remains of a cat have been found in the remains of a beach fire.

An animal rights charity is appealing for information after the body of a cat was found in the remains of a fire on a beach. The Scottish SPCA said the body of the animal was discovered on Portobello Beach near Edinburgh.

A member of the public, who works for the Edinburgh dogs and cats home, discovered the charred remains at around 7am on Tuesday (November 25). The Scottish SPCA said a witness told them two middle-aged men were reportedly in the area behaving suspiciously at around 4.20pm on Monday near a bonfire on the beach.

The charity said the cat was burned beyond recognition, and it is unclear whether it was alive or dead when it was burned. Staff are attempting to find a microchip to identify the animal.

A Scottish SPCA inspector said: “This is a very upsetting case and we are keen to establish what happened. At this stage we cannot confirm if the cat was dead or alive before being placed in the fire.

“If anyone was in the area of Portobello Beach on Monday evening or Tuesday morning and saw anything suspicious, or has any information at all that could help, we would urge them to contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
