Police have launched an investigation after a cyclist was taken to hospital after being assaulted by a man in Edinburgh.

The incident, which took place in High School Wynd in Cowgate was caught on video, which has now made its rounds on social media.

The video shows a man, believed to be the driver, and a woman confronting a cyclist at a junction in front of a white car. The altercation intensifies when the driver forcefully grabs the cyclist and slams him to the ground while the woman watches without intervening. The cyclist remains on the ground, holding his head, as the couple return to their car.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.25pm on Friday, 20 September, 2024, we received a report of a male cyclist being assaulted during an altercation with the male driver of a car in High School Wynd, Edinburgh.

“The 34-year-old victim was taken to hospital to be checked over and officers are following positive lines of enquiry in relation to the incident.”

The video has now raked over 24 million views on X (formerly Twitter), with many calling on the man to be reprimanded. One said: “Whatever the reason, it was never right for him to hurt the person with the bike that way.”

Another chimed in: “License plate plus good attorney is all that cyclist needs. Yeah, we all hate bully cyclists, but that level of spine-cracking skull-breaking violence is over the top.”
