The FSA have advised adults to check any products they may have at home to ensure they they are not possibly contaminated with cereulide.

The FSA said in its recall notice: “The possible presence of cereulide (toxin) in the products listed above. Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. Cereulide is highly heat stable meaning it is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, or when making the infant milk according to NHS guidelines. If consumed it can lead to rapid onset of symptoms. Symptoms caused by this toxin include nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

Customers who have already purchased any of the above products are being instructed not to feed the formula to their children. You can return the product to the point of purchase with or without a receipt for a full refund.

Katie Pettifer from the FSA said: “The affected batches are unlikely to still be on shop shelves but may be in your cupboard. If you have an affected batch, do not use it. You can return it to the store and exchange it for an unaffected batch.

“If you are feeding your baby one of the affected batches, stop using it and switch to an unaffected batch from the same brand or another brand. If your baby’s formula was prescribed, speak to a pharmacist or doctor before changing.”

Several batches of baby formula products have already been recalled this year. As a precaution, Nestle withdrew a number of SMA products from shelves last week due to the possible presence of cereulide. Danone also recalled a batch of Aptamil First Infant Formula on January 24.

Both Danone and Nestle have confirmed that they are no longer using the affected supplier. They also confirms that Aptamil, Cow & Gate, and SMA products currently on shelves do not contain the contaminated ingredient.

A spokesperson for Danone North Europe: “Danone never compromises on food safety, and we want to reassure all parents that we take this responsibility seriously. All our baby formulas are produced under strict food safety and quality standards and undergo rigorous checks before leaving our factories.”
