Motorist arrested for drug-driving after car smashes into tree - and engine is thrown out

A drug-driver had a miracle escape when his car left the road and smashed into a tree.

The force of the crash was so great that the engine was flung from the car in the collision.

Police say the driver was “lucky to walk away” from the crash. They think that the car came off the road at high speed and hit the tree 10ft up the trunk. They say the car came to rest 40ft to 50ft further down the road, and the engine was found 10ft to 20ft further on than that.

The driver was checked over at the scene but “escaped without serious injury”, say police. However, he failed a roadside drug wipe for cannabis and was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and possession of cannabis.

The crash happened near Wigton in Cumbria. Cumbria Constabulary say they, like forces across the country, have launched their annual drink and drug-driving campaign and that last year they arrested more than 200 motorists for drug or drink-driving.

They added: “Make sure you are not part of this year’s statistics by not drink or drug driving.”
