Flash flood and heavy rain in parts of the country yesterday saw roads and railways flooded.

Commuters are still being warned about disruption to their travel this morning (September 24) after yesterday’s downpour, with many routes still blocked by high water. National Highways took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a dramatic image of one road which has been heavily impacted.

The A421 Bedfordshire between A6 Bedford and M1 Brogborough will remain closed today after it was submerged under flood water, effectively turning the normally busy road into a lake. The transport service said in an update: “The #A421 #Bedfordshire remains closed in both directions between #A6 #Bedford and #M1 #Brogborough due to flooding following heavy rainfall. “Our area team continue to work at scene taking water away using tankers.”

Scene such as this have been replicated elsewhere. Railway lines in have been blocked by flood water and other roads have also been closed due to the rising levels.

There are 34 flood warnings and 96 flood alerts in place today as the country deals with the dramatic flash flooding which took place on Monday. While rain is set to subside on Tuesday, there are warnings that travel may still be disrupted until roads and railway lines return to normal levels.
