Weekend weather forecast: Met Office reveal if it will stop raining as summer begins in a washout

Following record breaking sunshine, the UK has received an onslaught of wind and rain - the Met Office forecast reveals if we are in for another wet weekend or if the warm weather is set to return.

Despite the UK seeing record breaking temperatures in May, June began as more of a damp squib but could that all change as we head towards the weekend? The Met Office says that’s unlikely.

The hottest May day on record for both England and Wales was set on May 26, with temperatures of 35.1C measured at Kew Gardens and 32.9C at Cardiff Bute Park yet, despite meteorological summer having now got underway, it’s felt a lot chiller, and much wetter since then.

A band of rain moving eastwards, with brighter intervals following for many on Wednesday (June 3). The mix of sunshine and showers has been a running theme across large parts of the country and more changeable weather is expected over the next few days too, according to Met Office forecasters, who are predicting “rain, showers and some blustery conditions, before attention turns to an uncertain weekend picture”.

Continuing with the unsettled theme, Thursday will see sunny spells interspersed with frequent showers, some heavy, with the added risk of thunder. Brisk winds in places will also make temperatures feel cooler too.

Some better news for Friday when conditions are expected to feel more settled, with “a mixture of sunny spells and occasional showers”. The rain is not expected to be quite so heavy as the previous day and winds will be less strong.

Weekend weather forecast

The outlook for the weekend is less certain though with influences over the Atlantic continuing to develop leading to different outcomes. Greg Wolverson, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office said: “The weekend will remain unsettled as an Atlantic system approaches the UK.

“The picture is still evolving, with several outcomes possible. The majority outline a breezy but not exceptional day on Saturday, however a few solutions highlight the risk of an unseasonably windy day with possible disruption.

“A developing area of low pressure is forming in the western Atlantic. By Friday, the way it interacts with the jet stream will determine how strong it is when it reaches us. It could either stay a well‑developed, windy system, or weaken significantly before arriving in the UK.”

“Rainfall totals could also build up through the weekend, with some areas of northwestern UK seeing successive periods of heavy rain. With several outcomes possible at this stage, do keep an eye on our forecasts as the week goes on and the picture evolves.”
