UK weather forecast: sunshine and thunder in store ahead of England vs Germany in Euro 2020

Thousands of football fans are eagerly awaiting England’s match against Germany next week as the teams move into the knockout stages of the Euro 2020.

Gareth Southgate’s England will face Joachim Low’s Germany on Tuesday (29 June) in the last 16 of the championship in front of 40,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium, while supporters across the country are expected to pack into pubs to watch the action unfold.

While the hotly anticipated match is expected to deliver plenty of drama, what does the weather have in store for those hoping to watch on outdoor screens?

Sunshine and thunder forecast

The weather over the weekend is forecast to stay dry across the UK, with sunny spells developing in some areas, while parts of south east Scotland and north east England will remain dull.

Some scattered showers may dampen spirits in the southern half of the country, but conditions will be less windy than yesterday.

Saturday (26 June) evening will remain dry, with clouds developing overnight which could bring patchy rain to some coastal areas. Heavy showers are also expected in the south of England.

Heading into Sunday, temperatures will be warm with sunny spells developing in many areas, although eastern and central England may remain cloudy.

The south may also be hit with heavy showers and thunder throughout the day.

Next week will start off largely fine, with warm sunny spells giving way to some chillier nights.

In good news for football fans, the weather looks set to be dry for much of the UK through to Wednesday (30 June), although periods of rain may hit the south and south east of England, which may become thundery at times.

When is the England vs Germany match?

The England vs Germany match will take place on Tuesday 29 June at 5pm BST.

It will be available to watch on BBC1 from 4.30pm, as well as BBC iPlayer.

The match marks the latest chapter in one of international football’s biggest rivalries. From the Geoff Hurst hat-trick in England’s 1966 World Cup final victory, to the Gerd Muller strike which ended their reign four years later, and the Frank Lampard goal-that-never-was in South Africa in 2010, the fixture has rarely been uneventful.

The game is also a chance for Gareth Southgate to secure victory after England lost to Germany in the Euro 96.

The England manager had his penalty saved in a shoot-out against Germany at Wembley in 1996, bringing the team’s dreams to an end at the semi-final stage.
