The police have confirmed that Nicola Sturgeon has been released after her arrest earlier this morning

Nicola Sturgeon was in custody after being arrested this morning, but the police have confirmed that she has now been released. The BBC have reported that the statement read: "A 52-year-old woman who was arrested ealier today as a suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Pary, has been released without charge pending further investigation."

Police Scotland revealed that Nicola Sturgeon had been arrested at 10.09 this morning and remained in custody until 17.42. The police also said in the statement that "A report will be sent to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. The matter remains active for the purpose of the Contempt of Court Act 981 and the public are therefore advised to exercise caution if discussing it on social media. As the investigation is ongoing we are unable to comment further."

Earlier today the SNP MP Joanna Cherry KC said on Twitter: "This is a sad and difficult day for Scotland & for my party."
