5. Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte
Netherland’s prime minister Mark Rutte offered his congratulations to Sunak. He tweeted: “Sincere congratulations to @RishiSunak , who will be the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. I wish him every success. I look forward to working with him to further deepen the long-standing, excellent ties between 🇳🇱 and 🇬🇧, and to working shoulder to shoulder in NATO.”
6. New Zealand’s acting prime minister Grant Robertson
Robertson is standing in for prime minister Jacinda Ardern as she travels to Antarctica. Robertson called Sunak a “good friend of New Zealand”. He said: “”Clearly the UK is facing some very significant economic issues at the moment, he’s said that himself. Inflation up over 10 per cent, the energy crisis, the war in Ukraine, so it’s going to be a very tough time for him. “I know he’s a person who values the relationship that the United Kingdom has with NZ. “Areas like our free trade agreement, I know he’s a supporter of that. I certainly give him our warmest congratulations and we look forward to working with him.”

The Australian government hailed the significance of Sunak’s rise to prime minister. Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers said: “Rishi Sunak is a friend of Australia as the UK is a friend of Australia. We congratulate him on his elevation to the Prime Ministership “The UK, like Australia, has no shortage of challenges and no shortage of economic challenges, so we wish Rishi Sunak well.” “Some of us had the opportunity to work with him briefly when we first came to government.
