Sam Cinkir, founder of skin and hair specialists Este Medical Group, explains that washing your hair like this allows shampoo, conditioner, and hair products to rinse away without coming into contact with your body, reducing the risk of clogging pores and triggering acne.
“Many people don’t realise that the ingredients in hair products, particularly conditioners and heavy treatments, can leave a residue on the skin,” said Mr Cinkir.

“Washing your hair upside down ensures that these products rinse directly down the drain, minimising contact with your skin.”
This simple adjustment can be especially beneficial for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin.
By preventing the buildup of oils and product residues on the back, chest, and buttocks, upside-down hair washing helps keep skin clearer and healthier.
Top tips to avoid acne from hair washing
Use a gentle, pH-balanced body wash:

Rinse thoroughly:
Ensure that you rinse all soap, shampoo, and conditioner off your body thoroughly. Residual products can leave a film on the skin, leading to clogged pores and irritation. Pay extra attention to areas like the back, chest, and underarms where products might accumulate.
Exfoliate regularly but gently:
Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells that can clog pores and cause acne. However, Mr Cinkir warns against over-exfoliation, which can damage the skin barrier. Instead, he recommends using a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week.
Change your shower routine post-workout:
After exercising, it’s crucial to shower as soon as possible. Sweat can trap dirt, bacteria, and oils on your skin, increasing the likelihood of acne. Use a body wash that targets post-workout grime and be sure to rinse thoroughly.
